| | I'm coming home from my afternoon tutoring session when I pull into the left lane so I can make a U-turn in Barnes and Noble (part of my usual Thursday routine since I get off work early) when I see one of those guys walking along the curb. We've all seen these guys, I'm sure. Disheveled, that sad look and clumsy gate to them withered looking clothes that when you add it up spells 'hopeless.' He's got a sign which says "Hungry father needs help, thank you" or something like that and I remember I've got 2 bucks in my pocket. And I don't know why but for some reason I have the knee jerk reaction to give the guy the 2 bucks (I did) which launches this dialectic in my head over whether or not it's right to do what I just did.
Clearly this is an image this man wants to cultivate to achieve his end. It's like I'm 99% sure he's full of shit but that 1% is blocking my sight because, obviously, I'm a sap. A part of me says that it's just 2 damn bucks and if he's wants to get 2 bucks worth of sex drugs and rock n' roll on me then more power to him. I'd probably be doing the same if I were him. And fucking A, I'd rather be working in a grocery store all day then have to sit on some damn corner with a sign trying to get people to give me a couple bucks so in some sense he's probably earning the little bit he probably gets. Or maybe he makes like 30 bucks an hour doing what he does. Does anyone know?

After thinking about this I think if his sign had just said "Hungry and needs help" I probably wouldn't have given him anything. I can't help but imagine some kid suffering because Mom and Dad can't cover the rent.
